Group meetings for mental health crises and addictions

Therapeutic group meetings play an extremely important role in working with people experiencing mental crises and struggling with addiction. Their strength stems primarily from the presence of other people who are facing similar difficulties. In crisis situations, when feelings of loneliness, shame or misunderstanding prevail, the therapeutic group becomes a space where participants can experience that they are not alone in their suffering.

Stabilisation in mental health crises

In the context of mental health crises, group meetings play an important normalising and stabilising role. Listening to other people's stories allows you to better understand your own emotions and reactions, and to see that the difficulties you are experiencing are human and can be worked through. The group provides a safe space to express feelings – fear, anger, sadness or helplessness – in an atmosphere of acceptance and mutual respect. This can reduce emotional tension and help participants gradually regain a sense of control over their lives.

Support in the process of recovery from addiction

Group therapy is particularly important in addiction treatment because it counteracts isolation, which is one of the key mechanisms that sustain addiction. Regular meetings with other people in the process of recovery help to build responsibility, motivation and consistency in the changes undertaken. The group becomes a place where one can openly talk about relapses, difficulties and failures without fear of judgement, while receiving constructive feedback and support.

Learning through relationships

An important element of group therapy sessions is the opportunity to learn through relationships. Participants observe different ways of dealing with emotions, conflicts and stress, and confront their own patterns of behaviour in contact with others. Thanks to this, group therapy promotes the development of interpersonal skills, such as setting boundaries, expressing needs, accepting criticism and building trust – competencies that are particularly important in the process of overcoming crisis and addiction.

A sense of purpose and belonging

Group meetings also serve to strengthen the sense of meaning and belonging. The experience of being part of a group with clear rules, regularity and predictability gives participants a sense of security and structure. In moments of doubt or relapse, it is often the group that becomes a source of hope and motivation to continue working on oneself.

As with other forms of therapy, group therapy sessions do not replace individual treatment or pharmacotherapy, but can be an extremely valuable supplement to them. In the context of mental health crises and addiction, they offer a unique space for community, mutual support and learning, which helps not only to survive difficult times, but also to build a more stable, conscious and fulfilling life.

Our mission

At the Wyjść z Ciemności Foundation, we believe that together we can achieve more. Our therapy groups are safe spaces where no one is judged and every voice matters. We create a community where you can be yourself.
We help our charges not only to ‘talk about problems,’ but to truly ‘share experiences’ – and draw strength from others.
